Why refinish a shower instead of replacing it?
Many Portland homes still have the fiberglass, acrylic, tile or cultured marble shower that came with the house. The surface gets dull, stained and hard to clean, and chips or cracks show up along the way, but the unit itself is usually still sound. Replacement means demolition, plumbing work, waterproofing and days of construction. Refinishing restores the shower you already have, in place, in about a day, at a fraction of replacement cost. It also pairs well with new glass shower doors or an enclosure, since the walls and pan stay right where they are.
Fiberglass shower & shower pan repair
Fiberglass showers crack for predictable reasons. The most common is a void beneath the floor: a pan installed without solid support flexes under weight until the material fatigues and cracks. Dropped bottles and tools chip the surface, and years of abrasive cleaners leave it porous and stained. We repair the damage before we refinish. Chips and cracks are filled and sanded level, low spots where water pools are re-sloped so the pan drains, and floors that are breaking or flexing are reinforced so the repair holds. If a pan is too far gone, we will tell you replacement is the better call.
Tile shower refinishing
Dated wall tile and stained grout make a shower look dirty no matter how much you scrub. We refinish ceramic and porcelain shower tile in place. Chipped tile is repaired, damaged grout lines are fixed, and everything is sealed under the same bonded finish as the rest of the shower. The grout lines stay visible but wipe clean, and you pick the color. Most tile showers are finished in about a day.
Sink refinishing & repair
The same process works on sinks. We refinish and repair bathroom and kitchen sinks in porcelain, enameled cast iron, European steel enamel and cultured marble. Chips around the drain, worn finishes and stains are repaired and then coated, so the sink matches the rest of the room without new plumbing or a new vanity top.
Our shower refinishing process
- 1. Deep cleaning and stripping: Old caulk, soap scum, body oils and mineral deposits are removed with professional-grade cleaners and an acid wash.
- 2. Surface repair: Chips, cracks and scratches are filled and sanded level, and weak shower floors are reinforced.
- 3. Masking and ventilation: The room is sealed with plastic sheeting to protect it from over-spray, and an exhaust system vents fumes and dust.
- 4. Epoxy primer: Four coats of a high-build, high-bond epoxy ultra-grip primer bond the new finish to the old surface.
- 5. Tacking: The fixture is wiped down to remove any dust that settled on the primer.
- 6. Acrylic urethane topcoat: Five coats of acrylic urethane with a built-in clear coat create a durable, high-gloss finish.
- 7. Curing and detailing: The masking comes off, the area is cleaned, and the fixture is re-caulked for a watertight seal. Most showers are ready to use in about 12 hours.

Shower refinishing FAQ
A fiberglass shower runs $750 to $1,145, a tile shower $900 to $1,495, and a fiberglass tub/shower combo $900 to $1,145. If a fiberglass unit has been refinished before, the old coating has to be stripped, which adds $250. Damage is priced separately: large chips add about $50, re-sloping low spots about $100, and structural crack repairs $125 to $350. Up to 10 small chips are included at no charge, and every estimate is free.
In many cases, yes. If the shower floor is cracked, flexing or weak, we reinforce and repair the damaged areas before refinishing. If the damage is too severe for a repair to hold, we will tell you replacement is the better option.
Yes. We resurface bathroom and kitchen sinks in porcelain, enameled cast iron, European steel enamel and cultured marble. Chips and worn finishes are repaired, then the sink is coated with the same bonded finish system we use on showers and tubs.
Most showers are ready to use about 12 hours after we finish, depending on room temperature and humidity. Your technician will leave you with exact aftercare instructions.
Use a mild, non-abrasive liquid cleaner and a soft sponge. Skip abrasive pads, bleach, ammonia and powdered cleaners, and remove bathmats after each use so the surface can dry. We also recommend keeping pets out of the shower, since claws can scratch the finish.
